Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer: Law and Freedom

Even when he was searching for the "eternal laws of architecture" and imparting them to his students, Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer still allowed himself the freedom to interpret architecture. For many eventful decades he put his stamp on baukultur and found a design vocabulary in it that was influential for the re-orientation after WWII and in particular from the 1960s. In 2008 his work was presented in an exhibition in Düsseldorf.

Scharoun. School. Town.

Hans Scharoun's method of dealing with space in relation to children can be easily understood through the school in Westfalenstrasse in Marl, which he designed and which was completed in 1979: the rooms for the smallest children are straightforward and full of nooks and crannies. The classrooms for the upper years have a clear, rational design vocabulary. And successive meetings with those of the same age and finally joint experiences are applied again and again in this building. Learning from this building – this was the approach of an exhibition in 2008 and the school foyer.

Hardly any other architect of his generation has shaped the term "baukunst" more than Werner Ruhnau: architecture, visual art and technology in a creative dialogue. In his work, Ruhnau continuously initiated the opening up of disciplines to one another, their interplay and had them flow into his work. In his works, as a wanderer between the worlds of the free arts he saw himself always as an administrator and director. In 2007 an exhibition paid tribute to the architect's life work.
