Projektion Ruhr is a narrative about the transformation of a region. The inclusion and exclusion of images and film sequences from a sheer inexhaustible wealth of image material creates new criteria for the telling of a story, for a new ordering of memory, and for new connections.

Projektion Ruhr – IBA Emscher Park, un laboratoire urbain.
Can the Ruhr region’s metamorphosis be depicted in an exhibition? It is people, with their wishes, hopes, worries and fears, who shape and design these transformation processes. Structural change evolves first in the mind.
M:AI decided on an unusual way of enabling visitors to experience the complexity of these processes of change. Conceptual artist Mischa Kuball showcases the region’s metamorphosis using his chosen medium - light. A “stream” of image projections develops. Sequences of images that now shape and describe the region’s appearance and identity. A composition created specifically for the exhibition by Düsseldorf sound artist Thomas Klein, who was inspired by the region’s sound evironment, strengthens the visual impressions.
The choreography opens up an atmospheric and emotional access to the topic. Projektion Ruhr plays with images, highlights, tells stories, mystifies, shatters apparently familiar objects, and links things that at first sight seem incongruous. Visitors are required to position themselves in the exhibition by moving on and in this “image stream”. The movements of the images and the specifically directed “sounds” influence their gaze and their progress in the “image stream”.
