M:AI – ALWAYS ON SITE. NEVER AT THE SAME ONE.

A museum devoted to houses, without having its own. One that is on the move throughout the whole of North-Rhine Westphalia. The M:AI Museum für Architekturkunst talks about immovable property but is mobile itself: this means that it arrives very quickly at locations where the original houses are found. And is also on the spot when current discussions and positions are involved.

This mobile museum therefore always moves from its base  in Gelsenkirchen to wherever architecture and the art of the engineer are to become the theme: because a building is particularly exemplary and people feel comfortable in it; because major architects, engineers, town planners and landscape designers have left behind pathbreaking work or because buildings of historic importance and cultural monuments are threatened by demolition and are discussed fiercely.

The M:AI uses exhibitions and excursions, lectures are artistic actions and publication to make the qualities and possibilities of a building visible – in particular to sharpen people's minds for good building and to show the building treasures that are located in North-Rhine Westphalia. This last is done outside North-Rhine Westphalia as well.

The M:AI has now been active since 2005 with many partners and orients itself in its activities to the latest subjects for discussion. The M:AI's projects are part of the government  initiative StadtBauKultur NRW. A newsletter on the initiative provides information on current projects and events and can be obtained by going to: www.stadtbaukultur-nrw.de/newsletter.html
